me were a confusion of horror at perhaps its perfection, was it so real it was wrong to have created it? This was a real person; it felt like Voodoo...or was it really too pale and very wrong? The doll had to be pushed through and I held my breath until the doll was finessed, and assembled. Paint and wig applied, then the silk dress, diamonds and platinum, white fur and stiletto heels went on. My interpretation of Elizabeth Taylor as a doll was created.

In the case of creating the portrait sculpt of Princess Diana, this called for a different approach. First, there was not the photographic or film material available in the same way. I had previously worked with the Princess Diana image for the Harrods magazine cover in 1983. I had also been in Paris the night of her fatal accident and was emotionally keyed into what collectors would seek in this doll. My solution was to draw a fashion caricature of the face for the sculptor. The exaggeration technique in caricature clarifies the idiosyncrasy
