Acrylic/Pastel/Ink & Assorted Media on Paper 20" X 26"
The painting was made to commemorate Barbie's 40th anniversary for the Elton John Aids Foundation exhibition, "The Art of Barbie" in 1999 at the Proud Gallery, London. The title and concept suggests Barbie wishing to hold back from reaching the socially sensitive age of 40 for a woman, casting her pert Germanic profile in shadow to retain her dignity. It is curious to note that since this celebration, Barbie has fallen from her dominant position in the fashion doll market.
